Plumbing only ever gets your attention in one of two ways – you’re paying the water bill, or something’s broken. Either way, it’s never a fun moment. And while every home is different, the plumbing problems that send people reaching for their phone tend to follow a pretty familiar pattern.
After years of call-outs all across the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay region, we’ve seen it all – usually at the worst possible time.
Here are the 8 issues that come up again and again, plus:
- What’s actually going on when they do
- And a handy ‘first move’ tip for each of them.
1. Blocked drains
Blocked drains top the list for a reason. Kitchen sinks, shower drains and outdoor stormwater pipes are all slowly working against you – grease, hair, soap residue and food scraps build up over months until water flow slows to a crawl or stops altogether.
Outside, tree roots are a sneaky culprit for this #1 plumbing problem. They seek out moisture and gradually force their way into pipe joins. Left alone, a slow drain becomes a backup, and a backup becomes pipe damage.
YOUR FIRST MOVE?:
Try a drain plunger or a boiling water flush for a minor kitchen or bathroom blockage. If it doesn’t clear within a couple of attempts, stop – you risk pushing the blockage deeper. Then it’s time to call a local plumber.
2. Leaking taps & fixtures
A dripping tap feels too small to bother with – until you realise a slow drip can waste thousands of litres of water a year. That’s real money on your water bill for something that usually comes down to a worn washer, a tired cartridge or a deteriorating seal.
It’s really an easy fix. It’s just one that most people put off for longer than they should.
YOUR FIRST MOVE?:
- Turn the tap off firmly and see if the drip stops or slows
- If it keeps going regardless, the internal components need replacing – a straightforward job for a plumber and not an expensive one.
3. Running toilets
You know the one – that faint, constant hiss coming from the bathroom.
A running toilet means the cistern isn’t sealing properly, so water keeps trickling into the bowl whether you’ve flushed or not. Worn flapper valves and faulty fill valves are usually behind it. Annoying, wasteful and almost always a quick fix once someone actually looks at it.
YOUR FIRST MOVE?:
- Lift the cistern lid and check if the float or flapper looks obviously out of place or damaged.
Sometimes the float arm just needs a gentle adjustment. If nothing looks obviously wrong or the problem returns, call a plumber – cistern parts are cheap, and the repair is fast.
4. Low water pressure
Low water pressure turns a shower into a light and irritating misting – and makes filling a pot feel like a life-long commitment.
The causes range from mineral buildup in pipes and partially closed valves through to hidden leaks or ageing infrastructure. Sometimes it’s a straightforward fix. Other times, it’s a plumbing issue pointing to something more serious deeper in the system.
YOUR FIRST MOVE?:
- Check whether it’s just one tap or fixture, or the whole house.
- If it’s isolated to one fitting, a clogged aerator is often the culprit – unscrew it and give it a clean.
A whole-house pressure drop definitely means calling a plumber.
5. Hot water system failures
Hot water is one of those things you genuinely don’t appreciate until it’s gone. Cold showers, dishes that won’t come clean, laundry on hold – a failed system disrupts more of daily life than most people expect.
The common causes are:
- Heating element failure
- Thermostat fault
- Sediment buildup.
If your unit is getting on in age, a system failure shouldn’t really be a surprise – they don’t last forever.
YOUR FIRST MOVE?:
Check the unit itself:
- Is the pilot light out on a gas system?
- Has a circuit breaker tripped on an electric hot water unit?
Both are easy resets. If that’s not it, or temperatures are just inconsistent, you need a licensed plumber or hot water technician.
6. Burst or leaking pipes
A burst pipe is the always one that gets your heart rate up. Water escaping into walls, ceilings or floors moves fast, and the damage it causes isn’t far behind.
Could be corrosion, could be excessive pressure, or it might just be old materials. Even a slow leak deserves prompt attention – ongoing moisture means structural damage and mould, often long before you notice either.
YOUR FIRST MOVE?:
- Locate your main water shutoff valve and turn it off immediately.
It’s not a watch-and-wait situation here. Call a plumber as soon as the water flow is at least isolated.
7. Blocked toilets
Blocked toilets are about as welcome as they sound.
They usually come down to:
- Too much toilet paper
- Wipes
- Hygiene products
- Or, let’s not judge, something that had no business going in there!
Persistent blockages can also signal an obstruction further along the drainage line.
YOUR FIRST MOVE?:
A toilet plunger is always your first port of call.
- Use it firmly and steadily rather than frantically – patience works better here.
- If three or four good attempts don’t shift it, or if the bowl starts to overflow, stop and call a plumber before it becomes a bigger mess.
8. Pipe corrosion & ageing plumbing
Many Australian homes – particularly older ones – are running on plumbing that was never meant to last this long. Ageing metal pipes corrode from the inside out, leading to leaks, discoloured water and progressively weakening pipe walls. The bad plumbing symptoms tend to creep up slowly, which is exactly why they catch people off guard.
YOUR FIRST MOVE?:
Are you seeing:
- Rusty or discoloured water?
- Reduced pressure across the house?
- Recurring leaks in different spots?
Don’t just patch each one individually. Get a plumber to assess the overall condition of your pipes – it’s usually more cost-effective to replace a deteriorating section than keep repairing it.
What about commercial properties?
Homes have their issues, but a commercial plumbing problem operates on a different scale. They’re larger systems, higher usage, and more fixtures in play – all meaning that when something goes wrong, it often affects multiple areas of a building at once.
A restaurant with blocked grease traps, an office with failing hot water, a busy retail space with drainage problems – the operational impact is immediate and serious and costs you money by the minute.
YOUR FIRST MOVE?:
Commercial plumbing issues generally need a faster response and more specialised equipment than residential work. If something goes wrong in a business, the answer is almost always to call a professional straight away rather than troubleshoot.
When to call a plumber
Some common plumbing issues have an obvious DIY first step – a plunger, a quick reset, a clean aerator. Most others need a licensed plumber, and the ones that don’t often become ones that do if they’re left alone long enough.
If you’re noticing unusual pipe noises, unexplained pooling, sudden pressure drops or a problem that keeps coming back, get it looked at sooner rather than later. Early attention almost always means lower repair costs.
